21:00hrs. The much anticipated friday evening is right here. The screeching bus and incessant traffic honks for the past two hours or so aid in a poignant continuation to the so called semi-annual meet at work. My weary mind slowly starts easing out as I get down from the bus and walk back home from Habsiguda cross-roads. Today evening, something just drew me to the the place that changed the way the past few years have evolved. Could not keep away from that road and building that I´ve been avoiding for the past so many years. I walk up the ramp slowly to the topmost floor.The Nepali guard watches me from the corner of his eye. I enter the ward with an excuse and in moments it all gets back in flashes. The beeps and the smell get back memories of days spent here hoping against hope.The ward is just the same. The smell lingers. Just that there is someone else on the bed there. Five months of training, one month of quasi-bench, three months on a tool, three months into Prod Support and with this comes to an end , just another year in my professional career. I never had to choose what was good for me. Folks out there always made the choices. Two days before I’m to report to the Mysore DC, I get a mail informing that I’m to report to the B’lore DC instead. Two months of generic training and they choose which stream you’d be spending the rest of your IT career. Mainframes, someone says has high demand in the IT market. I take it with two tablespoons of salt. Two and a half months of core training and then you’re almost randomly allocated to a unit that you only have a vague idea of. Wait, they also choose the DC in which you’d be working - Thankfully an iota of consideration is given to your place of domicile.You’d be lucky if you get a project in the very first month. Am I not complaining? But then there’s no one to blame. More or less every IT company does this! ...
8:00 pm ! I thank Dona in my mind for ending the call well before schedule and rush out of the conference room to my cube; Send in a report to my PL about the clients call, quickly shut down the system and run towards the swipe out machines. It’s been just a minute that I’ve thanked my access card for working fine at this moment that it suddenly stops responding at the turnstiles. Time to curse the facilities department for not having issued me a new access card. Fortunately the ‘beep’ finally sounds and I’m given access to the exit! Huh! The swearing continues… ...
